Step 5. Lights, Motors, Sensors, and Wires
Interface A has eight ports for 4.5-volt peripherals. There are six outputs and two inputs. That means you can connect any combination of up to six lights/motors, and up to two optical/touch sensors.
- Lights are part 08010dc01.
- Motors are part 6216m2.
- Optical sensors are part x1161cx1. An optional part for optical sensors is the optical disc, part 2958pb002.
- Touch sensors are part x1167cx1.
- Wires have various part numbers depending on the length and plug color. The wires with gray plugs are cheapest because they're the most common color. Lego made many types of wires and plugs over the years. You need the kind with plugs that are two-lead, two-prong, with a center post, like this. Often the actual wires are worn out, but they're easy to replace by tearing off a wire pair from a generic gray ribbon cable. You don't solder anything: just strip the end of the wire, loosen the connector screw, insert the wire, and tighten the screw.
- All of the above parts are widely available on websites such as Bricklink and eBay.
- If you also need a comprehensive supply of Lego construction parts, then I recommened shopping for set 9700 Technic Control Center because it includes all of the lights, motors, sensors, and wires, plus a huge assortment of standard Legos.
